Low Nitrogen Septic Awareness for Hog Creek – Watch Zoom Meeting

Low Nitrogen Septic Awareness for Hog Creek – Watch Zoom Meeting

Event Date: May 25, 2023
Time: 6PM - 7PM

East Hampton is considered by The Nature Conservancy, as one of the “Last Great Places” in the Western Hemisphere, but we have some immediate environmental concerns in our communities that need to be addressed.

Cornell Cooperative Extension’s recent comprehensive study of Hog Creek demonstrated that we have elevated nitrogen levels. Our pond on Pond Lane had elevated Cyanobacteria and microcystin levels.  Both are related primarily to increased nitrogen, which is particularly dangerous to dogs.
·       The nitrogen levels are primarily coming from our septic systems.
·       Elevated nitrogen puts the ecology of the creeks and ponds in jeopardy, which might lead to harmful algal blooms and fish kills.

There is some good news in this story – funding is available that covers the cost of upgrading your septic system. And there are other simple landscaping changes that we can all make which will further help to protect and restore our once pristine environment. We would like to educate residents on the state of the problem and how to update septic systems with subject matter experts.

The Lion’s Head Beach Association Board held a Zoom meeting concerning Low Nitrogen Septic Awareness for Hog Creek.
